After difficult recent years, we are seeing increasing interest in both Mining and Oil & Gas. Oil’s recovery to $50 a barrel has created more confidence in executing M&A in the Natural Resources sector, and we have helped our clients to take advantage of this. We assisted Eland in its $18 million secondary raise in April 2016 and advised Rockhopper on its acquisition of FOGL completing in January 2016. The picture in Mining is more complex. Gold price strength has seen increased activity in that sector and interest in base metals remains strong with notable activity in Copper M&A a prominent theme this year. While the outlook on bulk commodities remains challenging we see increasing signs in the Corporate and PE communities of interest in executing deals ahead of a more substantive commodity price recovery.
Opportunities in a recovering sector
The weakness in commodity prices has subdued activity in this sector in recent years, but we have remained active and committed to the sector. As sentiment improves we are seeing notable signs of investor interest returning to the extractive industries.
